The Cost of Apple's New iPads Increases Due to New Features, Colors, and Specifications

 

The Pro version now has an M2 chip, and new accessories will be released on October 26.

The release date for this year's fall iPad models is a little later, and the most affordable model is becoming more pricey. The entry-level iPad received a long-awaited facelift with USB-C to match the rest of the roster, but with a price jump to $449 and up. On Tuesday, Apple unveiled upgrades to its iPad and iPad Pro lineups. The new iPad is now available in four hues, including variants in very bright yellow and pink as well as the traditional blue and silver.

The iPad Pro, meanwhile, now features the most recent M2 processors from the manufacturer. The entry-level iPad was updated last fall, while the iPad Pro series received an update in spring 2021 with M1 processors and support for 5G.

The entry-level 10th generation iPad, which is available for preorder today and ships on October 26th, includes an A14 CPU and USB-C. However, it does not utilise the Pencil 2; rather, it does so by using a USB-C converter and the Pencil 1. The entry-level model lacks a Smart Connector, but it does come with a new, expensive $249 Magic Keyboard Folio accessory that incorporates a kickstand. The cost of the iPad has also increased: the entry-level Wi-Fi device, which costs $449 (£499, AU$749), only has 64GB of storage; a step-up 256GB model, which costs $150 more, feels almost required.

In a tough economy, the higher price of the most basic iPad is unwelcome news, but Apple continues to offer the $329 entry-level model from the previous year.

An M2 processor, a new hovering Pencil 2 function that activates before the stylus touches the screen, and additional millimetre wave 5G capability in the cellular edition are all included in the latest iPad Pro. It's accessible on October 26 on the same day. Although the 12.9-inch model starts at $1,099 and the 11-inch model with 128GB of storage starts at $799 (£899, AU$1,399), it costs an additional $200 to switch to the cellular variant this time. Storage capacities range from 128GB to 2TB.
